Daily Digest: Trump seals the deal

Good morning, and welcome to Wednesday. Let's go right to the news and the aftermath of the Indiana primary.

1. Almost no one predicted Donald Trump would end up being the Republican presidential nominee, but it looks like he will. After a huge victory in Indiana Tuesday Ted Cruz dropped out of the race, and a clear path opened before Trump. He called for the GOP to unify behind him and said he will make America win again. Bernie Sanders won the Democratic primary in Indiana, but gained little ground against Hillary Clinton.  (Washington Post)

2. Less than a month after winning the Wisconsin primary Ted Cruz told his shocked supporters last night he had no path to victory. Ultimately Cruz was unable to get the anti-Trump forces in the Republican Party to coalesce behind him. (New York Times)

3. Remember right after the Minnesota caucuses when a cry went up for the state to switch to a primary system? Now with just three weeks to go in the legislative session some of the heat has gone out of the issue. Especially when the political parties insist on a closed system, where voters will have to identify which party they belong to and pledge they'll back its candidates. (MPR News)

4. Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature disagree about what changes should be made to MNsure, the state's online health insurance exchange. With such stark differences it seems unlikely anything will become law. But one thing's for sure. MNsure will be a campaign issue in November. (MPR News)

5. Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was in Minnesota Tuesday urging state lawmakers to pass a bill requiring background checks for all gun purchases. That legislation is going nowhere at the Capitol. (Star Tribune)
