Today's Morning Edition music is from Carl Perkins performing his original composition "Blue Suede Shoes."
It was the first song to make it into the top five on both the country and rhythm and blues charts.
Sixty years ago today, Perkins and his band were on their way to New York to perform "Blue Suede Shoes" on "The Perry Como Show" when they got into serious car accident. Perkins was in the hospital when Elvis Presley became a huge national star.
Elvis performed the song on "The Steve Allen Show" while wearing a pair of blue suede shoes.
Perkins would later say this about Elvis: "He had the looks, the moves, the manager and the talent. And he didn't look like Mr. Ed like a lot of the rest of us did."
