Impact of mental health money to lower gun violence unclear

Advocates for people with mental illness are praising President Obama's call to allocate an additional $500 million for mental health services. That was part of Obama's speech Tuesday in which he outlined executive actions he was taking to prevent gun violence.

He didn't specify how the mental health money would be spent and it would still need to go through the appropriations process.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Sue Abderholden, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health.
