Sen. Kathy Sheran, DFL-Mankato, will end a 10-year career in the Minnesota Senate at the end of 2016.
Sheran chairs the Health, Housing and Human Services Committee. She announced Monday she will not seek re-election in 2016.
Sheran was first elected in 2006.
She has been a leader on health care issues during her time in the Senate. She authored and successfully negotiated the bill that prohibited second-hand smoke in bars and restaurants. She authored changes to the Minnesota Sex Offender Program which passed in the Senate but not the House. She also authored legislation and secured funding for improvements to the Child Protection system.
Sheran will continue as HHS Policy Chair through 2016 and serve on Higher Education, Judiciary, and HHS Finance committees.
Two other Democrats, Sen. Bev Scalze, DFL-Little Canada, and Sen. Barb Goodwin, DFL-Columbia Heights, have said they will not run for re-election in 2016.
