Minneapolis police began removing barricades outside the Fourth Precinct police station in north Minneapolis Tuesday, shortly after Minneapolis NAACP leaders held a press conference calling for their removal.
Police erected the barricades last week, after clearing out a camp protesters had occupied since the police shooting death of Jamar Clark in mid-November. Authorities said they'd already scheduled removal of the barricades to improve access to the Fourth Precinct.
Standing in front of the police headquarters, Nekima Levy-Pounds said the police built what looks like a prison behind her, and she wanted it gone.
"We need to ask the question of, what kind of city are we creating in the city of Minneapolis? Right now, it feels like a city that is separate and unequal," Levy-Pounds said.
