Jerry Lee Lewis says he was born jumpin'

Eighty years ago today outside Ferriday, La., in a house with no electricity, plumbing or running water, Mamie Lewis was having a baby.

A doctor arrived to help her through a difficult labor — but by the time the baby was ready to be born, the doctor had passed out drunk in a chair.

So Elmo Lewis delivered his son himself. It was a breech birth and, as Jerry Lee Lewis liked to say, "I come out jumpin' and I been jumpin' ever since."

Jerry Lee Lewis will celebrate his 80th birthday with a performance Saturday night at the Julie Rogers Theater in Beaumont, Texas.
