A band playing tonight at Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry is ready for a name change.
The Calgary-based band has played since 2012 under the name Viet Cong. But that's also the name westerners gave the National Liberation Front, a political organization and army that fought against South Vietnam and the United States during the Vietnam War.
A number of groups, including one in the Twin Cities, has called on the band to change the name. The Vietnamese Student Association of Minnesota is planning a protest at tonight's show. They demand that the name be changed immediately.
The band recently announced that the name will be changed, but hasn't said when.
Today's Morning Edition music is from a song called "Continental Shelf" by a band that will be playing tonight at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. The name of the band? Well, that's a matter of great controversy. Since their inception in 2012, the Calgary-based band has called themselves Viet Cong which is also the name of an army that fought against South Vietnam and the United States during the Vietnam War.
