A 58-year-old man drowned on Lake Vermilion Monday night as nearby boaters attempted to rescue him.
The occupants of another boat spotted Richard Dziewit of Greendale, Wis., in the water shortly after 8 p.m. near Greenwood Township, Minn., according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
The engine on Dziewit's boat was running. The boat circled him as he treaded water. The other boaters were able to pull Dziewit's boat away from him, but law enforcement officials said Dziewit then sank under the water.
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad recovered Dziewi''s body shortly before 11 p.m. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
