Duluth asks residents to limit water use

Duluth officials are asking residents and businesses across the entire city to conserve water until late Thursday while workers repair water lines.

Utility crews are repairing a 36-inch water line dating back to the 1800s that serves all areas of the city. Workers also are repairing several emergency breaks to smaller water lines, said Eric Shaffer, the city's chief engineer for utilities.

"Part of this was scheduled, part of it was emergency," Shaffer said. "But the scheduled maintenance is part of our ongoing plan to reinforce the water system and stop the emergencies."

Duluth officials are asking residents to wait until Thursday to use washing machines, hot tubs and dishwashers. The city also has asked that residents not water lawns.
