A push at the University of Minnesota to adopt a new sexual consent policy hit an unexpected roadblock last week.

The affirmative consent policy would require students to get clear consent from their partners before engaging in sexual activity. Despite expectations that the policy would be in place for the coming school year, the Board of Regents decided to delay implementing it to allow more time for consideration.

The University's move comes as more schools across the country are adopting affirmative consent standards. That's prompting a national conversation about what the policies mean for schools and whether they really mark a step in the right direction.

MPR News' Tom Weber looked at the proposed affirmative consent laws and the potential of the Minnesota Legislature passing it statewide.
