How some local governments are fighting invasive aquatic species

Some Minnesota counties are funding aggressive programs to fight the spread of invasive aquatic species, with help from lake association fees and taxes from lake improvement districts.

Others are doing little.

An uneven approach has long been a weak link in the fight to stop the lake-to-lake movement of zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil and other species damaging state waterways.

But last year, lawmakers approved $10 million more a year to help local governments.

MPR News' Tom Weber checked in with three local districts that are taking an aggressive approach to fighting invasives.
