Rachel Dolezal's story recently sparked a national conversation about racial identity.
Dolezal had been presenting herself as African-American and was serving as the president of the Spokane, Wash., chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She had become a prominent figure in the civil rights movement until she was outed as white by her parents.
In the process, Dolezal set off a debate about racial identity, white privilege and cultural appropriation that has touched every corner of the country.
