Starting Wednesday, drivers on Interstate 94 between Woodbury and the Wisconsin border can drive a little bit faster. The posted speed limit will rise from 65 to 70 mph.
The increase will improve traffic flow between the two states, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Monday. Wisconsin recently decided to boost the I-94 speed limit on its side of the St. Croix River, MnDOT noted.
The change affects nine miles of I-94 starting at the Interstate 494-Interstate 694 split. MnDOT said a study it conducted looking at crash rates, highway shoulder widths and actual driver speed on that found that increasing the speed limit to 70 mph was appropriate for this stretch of highway.
