Workers built an eastbound ramp on the St. Croix Crossing bridge over the St. Croix River in Oak Park Heights on Thursday. The pre-cast segments, shown in blue lifting equipment, will eventually support the bridge deck driving surface.

This week, giant rectangular concrete tubes that were built downriver from Oak Park Heights, Minn., are beginning to be put in place. They've been hauled upriver by tugboat from a plant in Cottage Grove, and they're ready to be lined up for almost a mile across the St. Croix to St. Joseph, Wis.

The new St. Croix Crossing bridge is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
