Today's Morning Edition music is from Herman's Hermits with "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter," which was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago Tuesday.
The band never thought it would be a hit. The song was recorded as an afterthought in two takes and never released in Great Britain.
Lead singer Peter Noone said that before their recording, it was well known among British bands. It would often be sung at birthday parties with the birthday girl's last name replacing Brown in the lyrics.
