Contemporary artists record historic country songs

A new recording out this week pays tribute to what Johnny Cash once called "the single most important event in the history of country music."

In 1927, the Victor Talking Machine Company created a makeshift studio in an old hat warehouse in Bristol, Ky. It invited artists from the area to record their music.

Many performers, including Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, were recorded there for the first time.

The new album "Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited" features the same songs recorded by contemporary country artists.

Here is a Baptist preacher named Alfred Karnes singing "When They Ring Those Golden Bells," along with Dolly Parton's version.
