It's time for Cinco de Mayo — the biggest Mexican-American cultural celebration of the year and maybe the least understood.
Counter Stories host David Cazares spoke with Consul of Mexico Alberto Fierro Garza at the Consulate of Mexico in St. Paul to clarify what Cinco de Mayo commemorates.
And, the Counter Stories crew discusses what it means when a holiday from another culture gets "anglicized."
St. Paul's Cinco de Mayo festivities take place Saturday on the city's west side.
In Minneapolis, the party is centered on Lake Street.
On Sunday, El Nuevo Rodeo restaurant will hold its annual celebration from noon to 7 p.m.
On May 10, Cinco de Mayo festivities organized by El Maestro Mingo will overtake Lake Street between 2nd Avenue and Portland Avenue from noon to 7 p.m.
