The Minnesota Senate paused today to pay tribute to retiring state Supreme Court Associate Justice Alan Page.
Page, the former Minnesota Vikings player, is stepping down from the bench this summer. He reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70 in August. Page was first elected as an associate justice in in 1992, and re-elected three times.
Sen. Bobby Joe Champion, DFL-Minneapolis, said Page has had an impact as a professional football player, attorney and justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.
“We have a wonderful opportunity to really pay homage and salute someone who’s been a wonderful role model,” Champion said.
Senators read aloud a resolution honoring his legal career.
Sen. Kathy Sheran, DFL-Mankato, noted that Page was the court’s first African-American justice.
“He has served with distinction, crusading against racial bias in the legal system,” Sheran said.
