The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday about whether states have the power to ban same-sex marriage.
Chief Justice John Roberts, responding to a proponent of gay marriage, warned there would be "consequences" if the court were to prevent states from deciding the issue.
"People feel very differently about something if they have a chance to vote on it than if it's imposed on them by the courts," Roberts said.
