A winter weather advisory is in effect for portions of central Minnesota until 10 a.m.

The infrared satellite image this morning depicted the colder, precipitation producing cloud tops (blue color) through central Minnesota.

A mixture of wintry precipitation was occurring across Minnesota between the Twin Cities through St. Cloud to south of Duluth shortly before 6:30 a.m.

The precipitation is expected to decrease in coverage and intensity today.
Another bout of precipitation is on tap for tonight and Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for tonight for central Minnesota.

TO 7 AM CDT TUESDAY...
TIMING...RAIN WILL DEVELOP THIS EVENING WHICH WILL TURN TO
FREEZING RAIN LATE THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT AS TEMPERATURES
FALL INTO THE UPPER 20S AND LOWER 30S.
ICE ACCUMULATIONS...AROUND ONE TENTH OF AN INCH.
Six inches of snow fell overnight in Butternut in Ashland County, Wis. More than 2 inches had accumulated near Brainerd, Minn., as of 6 a.m.
A large swath of the region could use some precipitation. The damp conditions, along with the cool temperatures, will keep the fire risk in check for now.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center forecasts a rather generous amount of precipitation in a narrow strip through central Minnesota from today through Tuesday night.

A chilly east wind is expected through Tuesday. High temperatures today will be unseasonably cool. Morning low temperatures on Tuesday will be well below freezing in the northern half of the state.

Another weather system, with the potential for a more prolonged precipitation event, is expected later in the week. Stay tuned as the models sort out the development and location of the prime areas for a cool rain.
