Major League Soccer ready to unveil Mpls. franchise plans

Leaders of the nation's top soccer league and investors led by ex-UnitedHealth Group CEO Bill McGuire are expected on Wednesday to unveil plans to bring a team to Minneapolis.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber and McGuire are set to announce details during a press conference at Target Field, the league said Monday.

McGuire's group has been in competition for months with owners of the Minnesota Vikings to win an MLS franchise. Last week, the league confirmed it was in "advanced discussions" with McGuire, whose plan includes a new outdoor stadium costing as much as $150 million.

McGuire currently owns a minor league soccer franchise, the North American Soccer League's Minnesota United.

The independent trade publication American Soccer Now has also reported that that Minneapolis is a "near-lock" for one of two planned MLS expansion teams.
