Last year, the Legislature passed a measure that will take the base hourly wage to $9.50 by 2016. That moves the state from having one of the lowest minimum wages to one of the highest.

The law angered some Republicans and business leaders, particularly in restaurant industry. Now a Republican proposal in the Minnesota House would allow restaurants to keep servers at the current $8 rate, as long as their combined earnings — with tips — exceed $12/hour.
