Today's Morning Edition music is from Madonna singing "Like Virgin," which was No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart 30 years ago today.

Billy Steinberg, who wrote the song, says it was not written for Madonna or another woman. Steinberg told the Los Angeles Times that it was based on his own experience. He said: "I was saying ... that I may not really be a virgin but I'm starting a new relationship and it just feels so good, it's healing all the wounds and making me feel like I've never done this before."

It would be the first of 12 No. 1 hits for Madonna and transform her into an international superstar.
