At 94, he was the oldest cast member of the Opry and had been a member since 1948. Dickens was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1983.

His first single was "Take an Old Cold Tater (And Wait), released in 1949. It also prompted Hank Williams to give him the nickname "Tater," which stuck throughout his lifetime.

There will be a public celebration of his life today at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He has been a member of that institution since 1948. It also prompted Hank Williams to give him a nickname that stuck throughout his lifetime, Tater.
