In 1944, Ruth Knox, then 25, signed up for the Women's Army Corps, known as the WACs. "My mother had a fit," Knox, now 95, said in a recent interview in her home in Minneapolis. "She just said, 'Nice girls don't go in the Army.' I was already in the Army."
