Today's Morning Edition music honors Grace Slick and the original version of "White Rabbit," which she wrote and performed with her first band, The Great Society. She turns 75 today.
When Slick left The Great Society, she joined Jefferson Airplane. "White Rabbit" enjoyed a makeover with Jefferson Airplane that included the elimination of a four-minute instrumental at the start of the track.
Slick is mostly retired from the music business. In recent years, she's focused on a second career as a painter.
The video below features a performance of "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock in 1969.
