Minneapolis will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day for the first time Monday, following a resolution passed by its city council in April. Minneapolis government offices -- including the 311 help line -- will close for the day and the city's parking meters will not be enforced.
After the Red Wing City Council passed a similar measure that same month redesignating Columbus Day, the city will also close Monday to celebrate Chief Red Wing Day.
While Columbus Day is a federal holiday, it is not a state holiday in Minnesota which means other state, county and city governments or agencies can choose whether or not, and how, to celebrate Columbus Day.
Dave Hunt, a spokesman for the City of St. Paul, said for more than 30 years the city, along with many other agencies, has traded a Columbus Day holiday for the Friday following Thanksgiving. On Monday, the city will run business as usual, he said.
