Record rain, steamy Thursday, spectacular fall weekend

Record rainfall triggered flooding in several spots in west central Minnesota in the past 24 hours.

Numerous reports of 2-plus inches of rain poured into the Weather Lab as storms hung over the same areas with intense tropical downpours.

Extensive street flooding inundated parts of Starbuck and Glenwood.

Here's a quick summary of some of the more eye opening storm reports that rolled into Twin Cities National Weather Service.

  • 3 NNW Waverly [Wright Co, MN] PUBLIC reports HAIL of half dollar size (M1.25 INCH) at 11:15 AM CDT -- TWO TO THREE INCHES DEEP...DESTROYED A 25 ACRE APPLE ORCHARD.

  • ST Augusta [Stearns Co, MN] PUBLIC reports HEAVY RAIN of 2.20 INCH at 12:44 PM CDT -- FELL IN TWO HOURS.

  • ST Cloud Airport [Sherburne Co, MN] ASOS reports HEAVY RAIN of 2.70 INCH at 12:53 PM CDT -- ONE HOUR TOTAL...AWPAG RAIN GAUGE. 0.90 IN SIX MINUTES. (new daily rainfall record of 2.81" and counting)

  • 1 W Starbuck [Pope Co, MN] PUBLIC reports HEAVY RAIN of E0.00 INCH at 1:13 PM CDT -- STREET FLOODING IN STARBUCK.

  • Glenwood [Pope Co, MN] LAW ENFORCEMENT reports FLOOD at 1:45 PM CDT -- FLOODED ROADS IN THE CITY WITH OVER A FOOT OF WATER COVERING SOME ROADS, ESPECIALLY IMPACTING THE AREA NEAR THE FAIRGROUNDS.

  • 1 E Swanville [Morrison Co, MN] TRAINED SPOTTER reports HAIL of quarter size (M1.00 INCH) at 3:00 PM CDT -- GROUND WHITE. HAILED FIVE MINUTES.

  • 11 S Onamia [Mille Lacs Co, MN] LAW ENFORCEMENT reports HAIL of tennis ball size (M2.50 INCH) at 4:05 PM CDT -- AT HIGHWAY 169 AND 250TH ST

  • Mora [Kanabec Co, MN] AMATEUR RADIO reports TSTM WND DMG at 5:35 PM CDT -- NUMEROUS TREES AND POWER LINES DOWN

Thundery into Thursday

The storm threat persists overnight into Thursday across eastern Minnesota into Wisconsin. Storms from central Minnesota sag south this evening and overnight, probably clipping the metro. The strongest storms may favor the northeast metro overnight.

Thursday feels like summer, then a potent fall-like cold front blows through by Friday. Canadian high pressure will bring a delightfully cool and dry air mass as high pressure builds in.
