Minnesota Republicans took aim again today at the new Senate office building they oppose by unveiling a butter sculpture of the building at the State Fair.
They said during a news conference that the sculpture was intended to highlight what they view as the absurdity of the building, which was backed by majority Democrats. The $89 million project is already under construction across the street from the Capitol.
Sen. David Osmek, R-Mound, said he likes his current office space and doesn’t see the need for new construction. But despite those objections, Osmek said he’ll have no option other than to move into the building.
“They’re going to take my area, the current Senate office area that we’re existing in,” Osmek said. “They’re going to turn it into maybe for the House, for communications staff, for the television studio staff, whatever the case might be. They’re going to take that and make it into other office space. So, I’m not going to have a choice.”
DFL leaders have said the new building is needed to free up more public space inside the Capitol, which is undergoing a major renovation. The building will house lawmakers from both parties.
