Medtronic agrees to buy device maker Covidien for $42.9 billion

Fridley-based Medtronic has agreed to buy Irish medical device manufacturer Covidien for $42.9 billion in cash and stock.

The combined company would have executive offices in Dublin, where it could benefit from a lower corporate tax rates. Medtronic employs more than 8,000 people in the Twin Cities area.
