The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is giving metro-area anglers more opportunities for trout fishing, just in time for Saturday's stream trout opener.

The DNR is opening up about 2 more miles of the Vermillion River for trout fishing. The public now has access to the Dakota County shoreline as a result of state land purchases.

The properties cost $384,200. The Vermillion River is well known among fishermen as a trophy brown trout stream just a short drive from the urban core.

As recently as 1960, the Vermillion was considered unfit for any game fish due to poor water quality. Since 2005, the DNR has said it has acquired land protecting nearly 10 miles of shoreline along the Vermillion.
