Police in Grand Forks say a five-year-old girl is safe after someone stole her mother's vehicle with the child inside it.
The girl was waiting in the vehicle while her mother was in a grocery store, said Sgt. Duane Simon. He said police found the girl and the abandoned vehicle about a mile away on the south side Grand Forks within a half hour.
Simon said the girl was not harmed.
"In a situation similar to this, where a child is found to have been unattended or left alone, just about any similar circumstance, we'll have medical personnel have the child checked," Simon said.
Simon said investigators have identified a person of interest in the case, but he said they're not ready to release any additional information.
Simon said the girl's mother had left her keys inside the vehicle.
