Revenue department officials say people who have been waiting to file their Minnesota taxes should now file their returns.
Earlier they had urged taxpayers to wait to file until the department's software was updated to reflect changes the Legislature made to the state's tax code. Gov. Mark Dayton signed a bill into law two weeks ago that provided $443 million in tax cuts -- many of which could be claimed on this year's taxes.
Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans said today all of the major tax software companies, including TurboTax, have updated their software.
"They've made the changes," Frans said. "Most of them have already sent out the updates and pushed out the notifications to their clients and customers. So people are probably already seeing that as we sit here right now."
Frans says about 1.5 million people have already filed their taxes. He says they should not file an amended return. He said the Department of Revenue will either issue a refund, ask for more information or request an amended return if individuals are entitled to a tax break.
Dayton also said at the news conference that he'll deliver his annual State of the State address on April 23.
