More details, IDs for five children in house fire

The five children who died in a house fire in North Minneapolis Friday were identified by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office on Monday.

Three of the children died Friday at the scene of the house fire, at 2818 Colfax Ave. N in Minneapolis, in the upper unit of the duplex, where a family of eight lived. Two other children died about an hour later at North Memorial Medical Center.

Two of the three children who died at the scene Gwendolyn Lewis, 18 months, and Christopher Lewis, 8, died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mary Lewis, 6, also died at the scene of apparent smoke inhalation and thermal injury, according to a statement from the medical examiner's office.

Troy V. Lewis, 3, and Fannie Lewis, 4, died later at North Memorial Medical Center, at 5:55 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. respectively. Troy died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning, and Fannie died of inhalation of "products of combustion" from the house fire, according to the statement.

On Saturday, about 100 people gathered in the yard of the burned duplex for a vigil for the children.

As of Saturday, Troy Lewis, the father, was in satisfactory condition at Hennepin County Medical Center. Shaca and Electra Lewis, the two surviving children, were in critical condition.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
