Gov. Dayton's office says Dayton will undergo hip surgery next Thursday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Dayton tore a hip muscle last June when he was rushing down the stairs at the governor's mansion. He had a procedure known as "platelet rich plasma injection" done on his hip last October. In October of 2012 he had surgery on his back.
Dayton's office says next week's surgery will reattach the major hip tendons to the bone around the hip point. They say it's expected to take about an hour.
"I have the utmost confidence in the medical professionals at Mayo and am confident that this surgery will ensure greater mobility,” said Dayton in a statement. "I want to assure Minnesotans that there is nothing about this procedure that will affect my capacity to fulfill my duties as governor or outweigh my passion for serving the people of Minnesota. I look forward to a full recovery and aggressively seeking re-election this fall."
Dayton's office says the governor will have to wear a protective brace for up to three months to keep the hip still as it heals.
While Dayton says he doesn't expect the surgery to limit his capacity as governor, it could have some impact on his gubernatorial campaign. Election Day is less than 10 months away and any downtime could limit his campaign and fundraising appearances.
