A 26-year-old St. Paul man died after he fell into the Chicago River trying to reach for a cell phone in the water early Monday morning, according to Chicago Police.
The man and his friends climbed over a fence in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood to get his phone, at the 400 block of E. North Water Street.
All three fell into the river, according to Chicago Police officer Mike Sullivan. A 21-year old woman is missing and and presumed dead. A 23-year-old man who was pulled from the water and hospitalized in critical condition at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, Sullivan said.
The three names have not yet been released. Chicago Police rescued the man who later died, and his friend from the river shortly after midnight. The man was pronounced dead at 3:14 a.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The two friends tried to help him, police said. Police officers spent more than three hours searching for the woman in the river, while there was no visibility in the water.
Authorities suspended the search until later Monday.
