Moorhead elects first female mayor

A political newcomer has defeated two sitting council members to win the Moorhead mayor's race.

Del Rae Williams will replace Mayor Mark Voxland, who decided not to seek a fourth four-year term.

Williams had 37 percent of the vote, while most of the rest was split between Councilman Mike Hulett, at 31 percent, and Councilman Mark Hintermeyer, at 30 percent.

City Manager Michael Redlinger tells The Forum that Williams will be the first female mayor of Moorhead since the city was incorporated in 1881. She takes office Jan. 1.

Williams has not held office, but serves as vice president of the League of Women Voters of the Red River Valley and treasurer for the Friends of Moorhead Library. She also served six years on the Moorhead Human Rights Commission.
