WASHINGTON - DFL Sen. Al Franken will hold hearings next week about a bill he's introduced in the U.S.  Senate that would require American intelligence agencies to provide more information about their activities that involve U.S. citizens.

Franken's legislation is co-sponsored by Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller and tries to address concerns about the National Security Agency's collection of phone and email records of American citizens.

“Right now, the public isn’t getting the most basic information about what’s going on with government surveillance programs. That needs to change," said Franken in a statement.

Among those testifying at the Nov. 13 hearing about the legislation will be representatives from the intelligence community, the Department of Justice and Google.

Franken chairs a subcommittee dedicated to privacy, technology and the law.
