The demand for food stamps has been rising in Minnesota ever since the beginning of the recession. One in 10 Minnesotans now receives food help from the federal government, so the expiration this week of a temporary boost in assistance levels will have an impact in the state. Meanwhile, Senate and House negotiators are considering whether to cut the budget for food stamps, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). One proposal would cut the SNAP budget by $40 billion. We look at the need for food stamps and why it's on the rise.
