Dayton heading to Mayo for hip treatment

Gov. Mark Dayton will undergo a medical procedure this week for his ailing hip.

Dayton will be at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Wednesday for what his office described as  a "platelet rich plasma injection."     The procedure is designed to promote healing of the torn muscle in his left hip, according to a statement from the governor's office.

Spokesman Bob Hume said the procedure is expected to last an hour under local anesthesia. He said the governor will then return by car to his residence, where he will remain for up to two weeks. There will no public events during the recovery period due to Dayton's limited mobility.

The 66-year-old governor initially injured his hip back in June when he was hurrying down a flight of stairs. Dayton also had back surgery last December and was out of action for several weeks.

The governor's office included this excerpt from Mayo's description of the procedure:

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a non-toxic, non-immune substance that accelerates healing. PRP is produced from the person’s own blood using a process called platelet enrichment activation. This process allows the extraction of platelets from regular blood and their concentration to over 5 times normal.  These concentrated platelets are then injected into the injured muscle to promote healing.
