Another Republican has formally kicked off a U.S. Senate campaign against Democratic Sen. Al Franken.

St. Louis County Board Chair Chris Dahlberg of Duluth made his announcement Thursday outside a home in New Brighton.

Dahlberg said he plans to run what he's calling a "front-porch"a campaign that will have him visiting with Minnesotans throughout the state. He said to win next year Republicans need to attract broader support than they have in the past few statewide campaigns. He said he'll focus on middle class issues.

"We need a candidate that appeals to independents and Democrats and I've demonstrated that in my district in northeastern Minnesota," he said.

Before winning election to the St. Louis County Board, Dahlberg, 51,  served on the Duluth City Council. He also served a tour of duty as an Army reservist in Iraq.

With Dahlberg there are now five Republicans vying to run against Franken next year : state Sen. Julianne Ortman, state Rep. Jim Abeler and businessmen Mike McFadden and Monti Moreno.
