Stephen King novel "The Shining" is going to become an opera, more than 35 years after it was turned into a movie. The Minnesota Opera will stage "The Shining" in 2016. Paul Moravec is composing the music with the libretto by Mark Campbell. The production will be directed by Eric Simonson.
This is the latest in a series of productions from the New Works Initiative, an effort to create new operas for the U.S. stage. Minnesota Public Radio's Euan Kerr talked with the Minnesota Opera's artistic director Dale Johnson about how "The Shining" was chosen.
(Editorial note: this story has been modified to add the production's composer and librettist.)
