Monti Moreno plans formal Senate campaign announcement this evening

Bison farmer and former hair salon owner Monti Moreno will formally announce his Republican campaign for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Al Franken at 6 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul.

Moreno says if he's elected to the Senate, he will work to balance the budget and reduce the national debt. Moreno attracted a lot of attention in 1996 when he sought the GOP endorsement to run against Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone. At the Republican state convention that year, he took to the podium waving a musket to make his point about his opposition to gun control.

"You see if you can't do it by ballot, you've got to do it by bullets," shouted Moreno. "Do you think these guys who wrote this Constitution and the Bill of Rights wrote it so they could go deer hunting? Do you think they did it so they could go duck hunting man? They did it so we can take our country back."

Moreno is the fifth Republican to announce a campaign against Franken. Also in the race are State Rep. Jim Abler, St. Louis County Commissioner Chris Dahlberg, businessman Mike McFadden and State Sen. Julianne Ortman.
