The Minneapolis City Council last week approved the construction of a 6-story, 140-unit apartment complex near the University of Minnesota.
"The site of the development is made up mostly of parking lots, but until recently it was also home to several small businesses including The Podium music store and The Book House," reported MPR News' Curtis Gilbert. "A group of residents fought to block the building, arguing it would change the character of the Dinkytown neighborhood."
The Minneapolis City Council rejected the recommendation of its zoning and planning committee in approving the development.
One of the businesses immediately affected is the neighborhood's long-standing grocery store, House of Hanson, which will be closing today. The building will be demolished as early as this week to make way for the development.
