U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann said Congress needs to dig deeper into allegations that the Internal Revenue Service harassed conservative groups seeking nonprofit status.
At a Capitol Hill press conference Thursday morning attended by dozens of Republican members of Congress, Bachmann said the IRS also plays a central role in implementing the 2010 healthcare law she opposed. Bachmann asserted without evidence that IRS could have access to private medical records and could find more ways to hassle conservatives.
"Could there potentially be political implications regarding healthcare, access to healthcare, denial of healthcare? Will that happen based upon a person's political beliefs or their religiously-held beliefs?" Bachmann asked.
The House Ways and Means Committee will hold hearings on the IRS scandal Friday. Minnesota Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen sits on that panel.
