The Minnesota Department of Revenue is extending the state tax filing deadline for some residents affected by storms this week.

Individual and business taxpayers in southern Minnesota now have until April 19 to file their taxes without penalty, said Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans.

"It's just too hard to tell exactly which counties are included at this point. It's fairly widespread. And we felt we had to get the notice out today, with the filing deadline on Monday the 15th," Frans said on Friday. "So we'll just make a determination from all those counties that were in the southern area that were affected. We will not charge a penalty for those who file on April 19."

Frans reminded taxpayers that the deadline has not changed for filing federal returns.
