The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office says there was no one in a car that witnesses saw sink in Cedar Lake Thursday.
Major Darrell Huggett said the Sheriff's Dive Team searched the black Honda Civic and surrounding water but did not find any victims.
The car was reported stolen, he said, and that someone likely stood on shore and rolled the car into the ice over the lake.
"The message here is that the ice is not safe. It is not safe," Huggett said. "You shouldn't be on it, shouldn't drive on it, and this is a really good example for people to take note that this is the end result."
The ice over Cedar Lake is as thick as three inches, but open areas of water remain. The sheriff's office said ice should be at least four-inches thick before people walk on it.
