Colorado civil union bill in limbo after GOP halt

DENVER (AP) — A civil unions proposal is in limbo in Colorado as Democrats pushed to halt a Republican filibuster in the House only to have GOP leaders abruptly stop floor work.

Republicans have a 33-32 voting advantage, but enough members of their party support the bill to get it passed. The bill needs to have an initial vote of the full House before midnight Tuesday or the proposal will die. That's because the Legislature adjourns Wednesday, so there wouldn't be time for a final vote.

Democrats used a procedural move to try to bring up the civil unions measure. Then Republicans said they'll recess for two hours, potentially dooming the bill.

The Senate has already approved the bill, and Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper supports it.

More than a dozen states allow either gay marriage or civil unions.
