ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis says it has dismissed an employee for alleged irregularities in credit card transactions.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the lay employee, who was not identified, worked in the archdiocese's accounting department. The archdiocese said Wednesday that it conducted a preliminary investigation and appointed an independent committee to oversee it.
In a statement, the archdiocese says as evidence was uncovered, the employee was dismissed and the information turned over to law enforcement.
The archdiocese says the matter won't affect its ability to meet its financial obligations, and that insurance would "substantially" cover the loss.

Because of the ongoing criminal investigation, the archdiocese said it would have no further comment.
