Joe Nathan, director of Macalester College's Center for School Change, tells MPR reporter Tom Weber why a law should be dropped that prevents colleges from advertising that Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) programs can save families lots in college tuition by having students take college classes while in high school.
"We think families need to clearly understand one of the key benefits - not the only benefit - but one of the key benefits, which is that if youngsters enter college having taken challenging classes, they will be able to save themselves and their families literally thousands of dollars."
Some high school officials say, however, that such dual-credit programs divert state funding for PSEO pupils from schools to colleges.
